Luthier Tools

Part of the process of building a guitar is collecting the tools to do the job. You will find I am a real big fan of having the right tool for the job. I also like to make the tools if I have the right tools to make them with. In the past a luthier would make all of his tools. Today with the increase people building stringed interments and the internet there are many places to buy premade tools. These are the tools I have made or collected.
Assembly Work Board
This was mounted to my work bench allowing easy access around the body for many assembly processes.
Precision Router Base and Rosette Routing Jig (StewMac)
This is for routing inlays and rosette channels with my Dremel
Sound Hole Jig (not required for the traditional guitar build process)
This is for creating a center point in a completed body to use Precision Router Base and Rosette Routing Jig.
Go-Bar Clamping System
A great clamping system for many stages of the assembly processes.
Peg Head Inlay Stand
This allows me to clamp the Peg Head flat and at a good working height on an uninstalled or installed neck.
Peg Hole Hanger
A simple way to hang the guitar for applying the finish.
Buffer
A must have tool to get a great polished finish. I am still working guards and maybe a bigger motor.

Bridge Clamps (StewMac)
As with any woodworking project you can't have too many clamps.
Saddlematic (StewMac)
Saddlematic quickly and accurately finds the correct location for a new acoustic guitar saddle slot, for positioning a new slotted bridge.
Nut and Saddle Files (StewMac)
Bridge Pin Hole Reamer (StewMac)
Measuring tools

  • Under String Radius Gauges (StewMac)
  • String Action Gauge (StewMac)
  • String Spacing Rule (StewMac)
  • Precision Straightedge (Grizzly Industrial)
  • Digital Caliper (Grizzly Industrial)
  • Dial Thickness Caliper (Luthiers Mercantile International)

Plate Joining Jig
This is for joining the soundboard and back halves together.
25' Radius Hollow Form (Luthiers Mercantile International)
This is for clamping soundboard braces.
Multi-Radius Form
This is for clamping back braces.
Brace Radius Jigs
These allow me cut the correct radius on braces very cleanly with my router table.
Side Form This is for clamping laminated side to the correct while drying.

Drum Sander (Jet 16-32 Plus)
Great for getting all the pieces the right thickness.
